The Broader Hospital Site
The land on which the Bristol Heart Institute sits has a long association with medicine in the city. The Bristol Royal Infirmary itself was founded in 1735 through public subscription, making it among the oldest infirmaries anywhere in the United Kingdom. It first opened its doors in December 1737 on what was then known as Maudlin Lane, now Lower Maudlin Street, admitting 17 male and 17 female patients. Over the following centuries, the site expanded considerably, with notable additions including the Edward VII Memorial Wing, designed by Charles Holden and completed in 1912. That wing was funded in part through a £50,000 fund established by Sir George White, a figure closely associated with Bristol’s industrial history, who had also given the city its first electric tramway service and went on to establish what became the Bristol Aeroplane Company. A fireplace in the entrance hall of the Edward VII building features tilework in Persian-inspired designs associated with William De Morgan, a figure connected to the Arts and Crafts movement.
